Strains (“pulled muscle”) are injuries to muscles or tendons, which are what connect muscles to bone. They can be caused suddenly by forceful stress on a muscle or develop gradually due to repetitive motion. Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon as a result of a strain or other injury.
Symptoms:
- Tender to touch
- Spasms
- Swelling
- Stiffness
- Increased pain with movement
- Redness and possibly bruising
- Weakness
Treatment:
- R.I.C.E.
- Rest – avoid activities that cause increased pain
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Laser therapy
- Acupuncture
