EMG is an abbreviation for electromyography, which is a diagnostic test to assess how effectively nerve impulses are controlling muscle movement. The doctors at Rehabilitation Physicians provide a full range of rehabilitative services, including EMG studies. They have two convenient office locations in Novi, and Howell, MI.

What You Need to Know about Electromyography or EMG

An EMG helps diagnose nervous disorders. During the EMG test, a needle electrode is inserted into a muscle. Your technician may place more electrodes at different locations on the surface of your skin in the areas where you are experiencing symptoms. The electrodes record electrical activity in the muscles. The activity is formulated into values. These values are read and evaluated by one of our Novi and Howell medical specialists.

An EMG may be ordered if you:

  • Feel numbness or tingling in your muscles
  • Notice weakness in your muscles
  • Experience pain or cramping in your muscles

An EMG may be recommended to aid in the diagnosis of:

  • Muscular disorders, including muscular dystrophy
  • Nerve-muscle connection disorders, including myasthenia gravis
  • Peripheral nerve disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Motor neuron disorders, including polio
  • Nerve root disorders, including a herniated spinal disc

If you have an EMG scheduled, you need to bathe and remove any oils from your skin. Avoid using lotions or creams on your skin after bathing. Your skin needs to be completely clean for the electrodes to transmit correctly.

During the EMG, you may experience small twinges or muscle spasms and slight pain when the needle is placed within a muscle.

After your EMG test, you may see slight bruising where the needle was placed in the muscle. The bruising is temporary and should resolve within a short time.
