FAQs About EMG

Are you concerned or have questions about the EMG test? Here at Rehabilitation Physicians in Novi, Livonia, and Howell, MI we understand how it can be a confusing procedure. We’re here to answer the top questions about the EMG test so that you can learn more.

What is an EMG?

This test investigates your peripheral nervous system and has two parts. One is the NCS, or nerve conduction study, and the other is an optional needle test. In the nerve conduction study, nerves in the arms or legs will be sent a small electrical pulse that is harmless to test the response to this stimulus from your nerves. This response is recorded by a machine.

This test helps give your healthcare team a general assessment of the nerves and muscles and can be helpful for things like Bell’s Palsy, Myasthenia Gravis, and other conditions. There can be needles involved, but they are small and not used in all of the EMG testing. Whether you will need these fine needles will be dependent on your specific health needs and they will only be used as a sounding agent to "listen” to your muscles.

Does an EMG Hurt?

There can be some discomfort in this test for those with low pain tolerance. Most describe it as a shock similar to a static shock. If for any reason the test is too uncomfortable for you, alerting your provider can stop the testing.

What Should I Wear to the EMG Test?

Loose clothing that doesn’t hug the body is great for this procedure. Make sure your clothes are easy to remove and do not wear hosiery or long underwear. Many will bring a pair of shorts and a loose-fitting tee shirt to wear for the procedure and change back into their regular clothes afterward.

How Long is the EMG Test?

This type of testing typically takes anywhere from 45 minutes to up to 2 hours, depending on the patient and the condition. The 2 hours is rare, and most patients are in and out in about an hour or so. If you have time constraint concerns you can ask your doctor before the procedure for an estimate on your specific EMG test.
